GRA Opens Probe into Alleged Customs Extortion in Ashanti Region

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an internal investigation into allegations of extortion involving officers of the Customs Division Task Force in the Ashanti Region.

The probe follows claims by the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) that customs officers intercepted containers bound for Kumasi, accused importers of undervaluing their goods and subsequently demanded additional payments. According to the allegations, one importer challenged the demands, describing them as unjustified.

In a statement, the GRA said it takes the allegations seriously and has initiated a comprehensive inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the incident. The Authority assured traders, importers and the wider public that the outcome of the investigation will be made public once the process is completed.

The tax authority reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and professional conduct, stressing that any form of misconduct by its personnel would not be tolerated. The GRA also called on stakeholders and members of the public to report suspected malpractice through its official complaint channels, as part of efforts to strengthen integrity and public confidence in the country’s customs administration.
