Cameroon : Customs Foils Suspected Bomb-Making Materials Smuggling Operation in the North region

Cameroonian Customs officials have intercepted a shipment of hazardous chemicals allegedly intended for the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), in what authorities describe as a major security breakthrough in the country’s Far North security corridor. The seizure was carried out on Friday, October 16, by officers of Zone III of the HALCOMI IV special operation near Garoua Windé, along the Benue River, a strategic waterway linking northern Cameroon to neighboring Nigeria.

According to Customs authorities, the operation was launched following intelligence reports indicating suspicious cross-border movements on the river. Acting on the information, officers moved in as a wooden canoe arriving from Nigeria docked on the Cameroonian shore.

Customs agents intercepted the vessel before its cargo could be unloaded, seizing 50 sealed containers of chemical substances and packaging materials suspected of being destined for the manufacture of improvised explosive devices. Security officials believe the shipment was part of a broader supply chain serving illicit bomb-making networks operating in the region. Investigators are now working to determine the origin, intended destination and potential recipients of the materials.

The operation highlights the increasingly prominent security role of HALCOMI IV, a Customs-led mission initially established to combat smuggling and illicit trade but which has expanded its focus to include threats linked to organized crime and terrorism.

A Significant Security Success

Authorities say the seizure may have prevented dangerous materials from reaching criminal groups capable of carrying out attacks in the north region and beyond. Following the interception, security forces secured the area around Garoua Windé while the confiscated cargo was placed under seal and handed over to specialized services for technical analysis. « An investigation has been opened to identify all individuals and networks involved in the trafficking operation », stated the Directorate General of Customs.

The seizure also underscores the persistent security challenges posed by porous border zones and river routes frequently exploited by traffickers. For Customs officials, the operation serves as a reminder that vigilance along these corridors remains crucial to disrupting criminal and terrorist logistics networks before they can strike.

The interception is being viewed as one of the most significant security successes recorded by HALCOMI IV in recent months, demonstrating the growing contribution of Customs services to national security efforts in northern Cameroon. By cutting off a suspected supply route for explosive-making materials, authorities say they have dealt a major blow to networks seeking to fuel instability in the region.
